The Governor's Cup Yacht Race

The Governor's Cup is a 1700-mile ocean race from Simonstown, South Africa to James Bay on St Helena Island. The race is held every two years, organized and managed by the False Bay Yacht Club. On the 22nd December 2012 a fleet of 20 yachts started to race against each other in a 8-14 day handicap downwind chase across the South Atlantic to St Helena island. Entrants typically ranged from fast racing boats with experienced crews to cruising boats manned by small families, some of which afterwards sail on from the island to other destinations. Some sailed back to South Africa (hard against the wind) while the remaining crews, supporters and yachts returned on board the 7000-ton mixed cargo/passenger ship, the RMS St Helena.
